Changing Country for a Subscription: What Is Legal

The law and the contract do not say the same thing

Using a VPN is not illegal in France, nor in almost all European countries. However, a subscription contract can perfectly well prohibit a use that the law allows.

The distinction is essential: the risk is almost never judicial — it is contractual. It is the service that sanctions, by closing or restricting the account.

What is clearly allowed

• Keeping your subscription while travelling abroad: EU portability regulations guarantee this within the Union.
• Updating your billing country after a genuine move, with a local address and payment method.
• Comparing prices — which is what this site does: pricing information is public.
• Subscribing to an annual, family, or student plan when you qualify.

What violates the terms of service

• Declaring a billing address in a country where you do not reside.
• Using a prepaid card issued abroad solely to obtain a lower price.
• Buying a pre-created account in a cheap country from a third-party marketplace.

Buying third-party accounts piles up problems: terms-of-service violation, no recourse if the original owner reclaims the account, and often a fraudulent payment method upstream.

Calculating the risk

Ask the question simply: how much is the content in this account worth? A Steam library of 300 games, a history of professional conversations, or ten years of playlists cannot be replaced for €120 in annual savings.

Conversely, on a service with no valuable history that can be cancelled at any time, the risk/reward ratio is different. It is up to you to weigh it, numbers in hand.
